5" Drill Press Sanding Disc

$50.00

The sanding disc is a precisely balanced tool that allows you to sand your work flat with a uniform thickness. The sanding disc fits any 1/2" drill press chuck and uses 5" sandpaper discs. It works in multiple passes up to 2-3 inches wide to prepare a flat surface. The sanding disc will not pull out the grain like a drill press planing tool might. Since the disc rotates on the wood surface, there are forces acting in all directions. It is strongly recommended that a fence and featherboard be used in combination to keep the object being sanded from becoming airborne.

The sanding disc is manufactured to sand flat but this will depend on how true your current drill press runs. The sanding disc pin is perpendicular to the sanding face within .00025 TIR (total indicated run-out). For maximum cutting, start with an abrasive sandpaper, usually an 80 grit. Once the desired thickness has been reached, increase the grit size (80, 120, 220) to clean up the swirl marks. You can use either a prestick sanding disc or cut your own 5" discs and attach them using contact cement. (Cleans up with lacquer thinner.)
    CAUTION:
  • Always wear eye protection
  • Keep your hands away from the sanding disc when in motion.
  • Start with the drill press at a low speed, and increase as is warranted.
  • Always use with a fence and featherboard combination to avoid kickback.
